Fannie G. Spongberg, 97
DENNIS – Fannie Spongberg passed away on April 26, 2019 after a brief illness. She was born on December 8, 1921 in Baltimore, Maryland to her parents Dr. and Mrs. Llewellyn Dykes. After nurses’ training at Johns Hopkins, she served as a nurse in WWII and continued her career in nursing with the Veteran’s Administration until her retirement.
Fannie lived in Braintree, Massachusetts prior to retiring to Florida. She attended Clown College and performed in children’s hospitals and parades. Fannie loved welcoming family and friends to her home and took her granddaughters to Disney World whenever they visited. After moving to Cape Cod in 1995 to be closer to family, she continued her active lifestyle by delivering Meals on Wheels, participating and making good friends at the Dennis Senior Center, joining the Dennis Union Church, and attending her grandchildrens’ sporting events. Fannie was a prolific knitter and crocheter of clothing, afghans, baby blankets, and stuffed animals, especially daschunds.
She is survived by her son Rob and his wife Janice, who was the daughter she always wanted. She also leaves her two granddaughters and their husbands: Katja & Brad and Kiersten & Jim as well as her great grandchildren Blaise, August, and Zipporah. She is also survived by her youngest brother Lowell Dykes, his wife Lucille, and a large extended family. She was pre-deceased by her husband Bertil in 1987, her sister Ruth Irene, and her brother Llewellyn. Fannie was deeply loved and will be missed by her family.
A Memorial Service will be held at The Dennis Union Church, Route 6A in Dennis on Saturday, July 13th at 1:00 p.m.
